Window blinds are a part of the house that most people hate to clean. It is an often overlooked part of our chores that we neglect, until one day when we look at the window and think, “Oh my. That is nasty.” Instead of letting your window blinds collect a years’ worth of dirt and grime and well before they turn that nasty yellowed color, you should consider learning how to clean your dusty window blinds.
If you can remember to add window blind cleaning to your list of chores and dust them when you dust other furniture, you will ensure that they never get too dirty. To do this, simply remember to bring out your feather duster. You open your blinds and slip the duster through each slat to clean both the top and the bottom at the same time. Your window blinds will not need such a thorough cleaning if you can remember to do this simple little chore.
For those who cannot remember to clean their blinds more than every few months, you can use a little soap and water or cleaning detergent to help you clean them. However, for this, you will want to use gloves and a sponge. Start with the blinds closed and wash them down the front, dry them off, and then twist so that they point in the other direction.
There are still some who only remember their blinds every year or so. There is nothing wrong with this, but it does mean you may have to put in a little more effort. Some people recommend that you take them outside and hook them up to a line using “S” hooks. Wet them down with the garden hose and then spray a cleaner on them. For heavily soiled, white blinds, you may consider using bleach. Spray on the cleaner, let it sit for a short time and then wipe them down with a sponge. Rinse with the garden hose and repeat if necessary.
Window blinds are the same as everything else within your home. The longer you wait to clean them, the harder you will have to work to get them looking good as new. However, even when they are at their dirtiest, it is not too hard to clean them. You simply have to take a little more time to do them right.
